7 Signs Your Website Is Costing You Customers

Most business owners assume their website is "fine." It exists, it has some information on it, job done. But a website doesn't have to be broken to be losing you customers. It just has to be slightly slower, slightly less clear, or slightly harder to use than it needs to be. Here are seven signs worth checking for.

1. It takes more than a few seconds to load

Every extra second of load time increases the chance a visitor leaves before the page even finishes loading. On mobile, where most local searches happen, slow load times are one of the biggest silent killers of enquiries.

2. It doesn't work properly on mobile

If text is too small, buttons are hard to tap, or the layout breaks on a phone screen, you're losing the majority of your traffic before they even get to read what you offer.

3. Visitors can't tell what you do within 5 seconds

If someone lands on your homepage and has to scroll or think to work out what your business actually does, most will leave. Your headline should say clearly what you do and who it's for. No clever wordplay required.

4. There's no clear call to action

"Call now," "Get a quote," "Book a consultation": whatever your next step is, it should be obvious and repeated throughout the page. A site with no clear action is a dead end, even if the content is good.

5. It looks like it hasn't been touched since 2015

Fairly or not, an outdated-looking website makes people question whether the business behind it is still active, still good at what it does, and worth trusting with their money.

6. Contact info is hard to find

If a visitor has to hunt for your phone number or email, or your contact form is buried three clicks deep, you're adding friction at exactly the moment they were ready to reach out.

7. It's not showing up in Google at all

A great website that nobody can find is invisible. If you search your own business name and services and can't find your site on the first page, there's a good chance your competitors are picking up the enquiries you're missing.

What to do next

You don't necessarily need a full rebuild to fix most of these. Sometimes it's a matter of tightening the homepage, speeding up image loading, or making the contact button more obvious. But if more than two or three of these sound familiar, it's usually a sign the site needs more than a quick patch.
